Division II quarterfinal showdown

No. 5 MILFORD (7-1) at No. 4 SOUHEGAN (7-1)

WHEN: Saturday, 2:30 p.m.

WHERE: Souhegan’s Saber Field.

Souhegan 40, Milford 13.

FYI: The difference in the Week 3 regular season win by the Sabers in this great local rivalry was simple: Souhegan was able to run the ball effectively, and the Spartans weren’t.

The trio of Cam Kinney, Joseph Nogueira and Zach Bossi rushed for a combined 145 yards, while the Spartans, despite one good long drive (13 plays, 74 yards), otherwise sputtered.

Mark Madigan led Milford with 123 all-purpose yards and a TD.

As Milford coach Keith Jones said, "They came out and punched us in the mouth."

That’s the way the Spartans like to do it, and they’ve succeeded since, outscoring opponents 197-65 in five straight wins.

Expect a much closer game, as the two teams have come of age since.

Also keep in mind Souhegan had trouble with fellow 7-1 Windham, losing 21-7, while the Spartans recently rolled over the Jaguars, 41-21.

This coud be a classic.
