Gillis playing at Junior PGA Championship
Souhegan Woods Golf Club member Brandon Gillis has headed to Rhode Island.
The Nashua High School North senior-to-be took to the links at Wannamoisett Country Club in Rumford, R.I., on Tuesday for the 41st Junior PGA Championship. Results were not available by Cabinet presstime. It’s the first time New England is hosting the event.
The 17-year-old member of Amherst’s Souhegan Woods Golf Club advanced to the U.S. Junior Amateur quarterfinals a month ago, and he’s a darkhorse to challenge for a title this week in the Ocean State.
The field features 156 players: 78 boys vying for the Jack Nicklaus Trophy, and 78 girls competing for the Patty Berg Trophy.
One of the girls in the field is also from the Granite State – 16-year-old Lauren Thibodeau of Hampstead. The Windham Country Club member and junior-to-be at Derry’s Pinkerton Academy came up just short of match play in last week’s USGA Women’s Amateur.
