Checking in at mid-season

The Milford High varsity bass fishermen came up big when it counted, taking fourth in the preliminaries to qualify for the State Championships on Saturday at Pawtuckaway State Park in Nottingham.

Milford netted the limit of eight bass, weighing in at 14.1 pounds. They’ll be looking to outhook the preliminary winners from Concord Christian on Saturday.

Here’s a look at the rest of the varsity teams and where they stand as the seasons turn for home.

Girls Volleyball: OK, so Milford is human, it has surrendered one set total through the Spartans’ dynamite 8-0 start. Souhegan struggled early, tumbling to five straight losses before climbing back into contention with three straight wins in Division II.

Girls Soccer: Souhegan, now 8-0, gave up its first goal of the season this week in a 2-1 win over Pelham. The Milford girls aren’t far behind, holding an 8-1 record with the lone blemish being a 1-0 loss to Souhegan.

Mark your calendars. These two Division II giants meet again on October 10.

Congrats to the girls from Wilton-Lyndeborough, who broke into the win column at 1-6-2 with a 3-2 win over Hinsdale.

Boys Soccer: Souhegan has been solid all year and is peering at the postseason with a 7-2 mark. After being shutout six straight times, Milford has shown improvement, scoring single goals in each of the last three games. The Spartans are 0-9.

Golf: Tough times for the Milford golfers with the state championships approaching next week. The Spartans have dropped eight of the last nine to fall to 9-12. Souhegan could be a Division II sleeper at states. The Sabers are 16-7.

Field Hockey: Milford most recently knocked off ConVal, 3-1, to improve to 4-3-1 on the year. Souhegan bumped to 9-1 by drilling Merrimack Valley, 5-1, Tuesday.
