Hollis Brookline High School teams with Coaches vs. Cancer
HOLLIS – Hollis Brookline High School boys JV and varsity basketball teamed up with the American Cancer Society’s Coaches vs. Cancer initiative on Jan. 22, hosting a charity game against the Souhegan Sabers.
The game raised cancer awareness and more than $4,100 to help support research and patient programs that save lives.
Funds were raised through donations to the Wall of Hope, concession sales, a bake sale, raffle, and halftime layup, free throw and half-court contests. The event was made possible with support from the teams and coaches, parent volunteers and community contributions from Hannaford, Chrysanthis’ Pizza and the Booster Club.
"Working on an event like this and seeing the community come together like this is so very fulfilling," said Lori Bonnette, a parent volunteer organizer.
Since 2013, the Hollis Brookline Cavaliers have raised more than $15,000 through the Coaches vs. Cancer initiative, which supports the lifesaving mission of the American Cancer Society.
"Words cannot express the pride that I have in my kids and our community," Cavaliers coach Mike Soucy said. "Each year, they approach this event with tremendous dedication, passion and enthusiasm. I am completely blown away by what this small southern New Hampshire basketball program has done over the years."
"The Hollis Brookline game has raised funds to find cancer’s causes and cures and provide programs that ease the burden of the disease for people in need," said Brian Casalinova, American Cancer Society community manager of special events.
"Our hope is that one day, students will never have to worry about the threat of cancer. This is an opponent we can – and will – beat."
Coaches vs. Cancer is a nationwide collaboration between the American Cancer Society and the National Association of Basketball Coaches that empowers basketball coaches, their teams and communities to make a difference in the fight against cancer. The program leverages the personal experiences, community leadership and professional excellence of basketball coaches nationwide to increase cancer awareness and promote healthy living through year-round awareness efforts, fundraising activities and advocacy programs.
