Thuner win title

The Merrimack Thunder Boys U13 Travel Soccer Team won the New Hampshire Soccer Association Championship recently with a 2-1 win over Portsmouth

City Soccer Club, 2-1.Merrimack got both goals from Jay Wozniak, and also used strong offensive passing and strong defense in the victory. The Thunder had reached the finals with a 6-3 semifinal win over the Barrington Storm.


Elks Hoop Shoot set

The Nashua Lodge of Elks will be hosting the 43rd Greater Nashua Elks’ “Hoop Shoot” Free Throw contest on Dec. 6, in the Elm Street Middle School Gymnasium on Chestnut Street, beginning at 8 a.m. There is no charge or fees to participate in the Elks Hoop Shoot Free Throw Program.

The competition is open to all interested boys and girls between the ages of 8 and l3, from the Hudson, Litchfield, Nashua, Hollis, Brookline, Amherst, Milford, Wiltonand Merrimack areas. A youth’s age on April l, 2015 determines his/her age division. There will be six age divisions, three for boys and three for girls each, 8-9, l0-11 and 12-13. Trophies will be presented to the top three boys and girls in each division.

Contestants will shoot five warmup shots before shooting 25 free throws for score, and must wear basketball or tennis shoes to compete. T-shirts, slacks or pants may be worn but basketball uniforms are preferred, but not necessary. As each age category is completed, contestants may leave.The entire contest usually lasts about two hours, enabling anyone to make any scheduled league games elsewhere.

Over two million youths competed last year in the Elks National “Hoop Shoot” Free Throw contest, starting with the local level, then on to district, state, regional and national levels. National winners will have their names inscribed in the Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Mass.

The Nashua Elks have sent 11 to national finals, namely Steven Piwowoski, Melissa Ayotte, Debra Killmon, Ellen Tipping, Ryan Robinson, Ryan Sullivan, Michael Panagoulias, Caleb Donnelly of Hudson, Max Coleman of Londonderry, Tom O’Hearn of Hudson and Tilak Patel of Nashua. Caleb Donnelly was the first Greater Nashua Area Champion to win the Elks National Hoop Shoot Free Throw Championship in 2006.

Local winners will compete in the Elks Southern New Hampshire District Free Throw contest in Rochester on Sunday, January 11. For more information, contact Elks Youth Chairman Al Savage at 888-0064.

The Milford High School boys and girls track teams will hold the fifth Turkey Chase 5K at 10 a.m. on Nov. 22, starting at the Milford Middle School.
