Merrimack comes up short vs. Milford

Through six matches at Wednesday’s dual meet, it looked like the Milford High School wrestling team was going to cruise to victory.

But Merrimack battled back behind a couple of pins by Nick LaRoche and Eric Theriault before falling to the Spartans 45-30.

Milford got out to a big lead early and were able to hang on to the match thanks in part to a comeback by Jacob Girouard at 145 pounds.

Girouard trailed most of his match against Merrimack’s Kyle Newman, but scored five points in the final 20 seconds, including three at the buzzer, to win 11-8. Also getting wins for Milford (1-0) were Kyle Faucher-Clancy (182) and Matt Digision (106), while George Horta (170), Josh Smith (195), Travis Hughes (285), Rueben Carson (126) and Michael Pellitter (152) each recorded a pin for the Spartans.

Merrimack’s LaRoche (120) and Theriault (126) recorded back-to-back pins to get the Tomahawks within six points, 27-21, with five matches to go. Also winning for the Tomahawks (0-1) were Lucas Gardenour (5-1 at 220), Matt Baxter (pin, 113), Sean Hebert (14-8, 138) and Mitchell McMahon (pin, 160).

Both teams are back on the mat Saturday at the Milford/Souhegan Tournament.
