Football playoffs in semifinal stage

With Milford and Souhegan squaring off in Division II, Greater Nashua was guarenteed to have one football team reach the semifinals.

Up in Division I, Nashua North suffered a 50-13 loss to Goffstown and Bishop Guertin allowed Bedford to rebound from a slow start to pull out a 41-39 shootout win over the Cardinals at Stellos Stadium. There was nobody representing the region in Division III on Saturday.

Over in Amherst, No. 5 Milford used a bruising rushing attack to wear down No. 4 Souhegan as the Spartans pulled out a 20-13 win in the D-II quarterfinals.

With the win, Milford travels to Dover for a semifinal showdown at 1 p.m. Saturday with No. 1 St. Thomas Aquinas. The Saints advanced with a 28-7 win over No. 8 Monadnock.

The other semifinal matchup in D-II will see No. 3 Kennett, which beat No. 6 Kearsarge 12-6 in the quarterfinals, traveling to Windham to face the No. 2 Jaguars, who advanced with a 34-16 win over No. 7 Lebanon.

In Division I semifinals, Bedford visits Goffstown out of the North/West Bracket and Exeter heads to Derry to face Pinkerton Academy out of the South/East Bracket. Exeter beat Salem 28-21, while Pinkerton topped Timberlane 23-17 in the quarterfinals.

Division III will crown a new champion this fall with defending champion Campbell not even qualifying for the tournament.

Saturday’s quarterfinals games saw No. 2 Newport beat No. 7 Somersworth 52-12, No. 4 Inter-Lakes/Moultonborough trounce No. 5 Bishop Brady 49-7, No. 1 Winnisquam dispatch of No. 8 Franklin 39-7 and No. 3 Bow get past No. 6 Stevens 21-14. Winnisquam and Newport will play host in the semifinals to I-L/M and Bow, respectively.
