SOFTBALL

Merrimack 9, Memorial 8

In a must-win game to assure a playoff berth, Merrimack orchestrated a big comeback after falling behind 8-0 after the first inning.

Merrimack went into the fourth still trailing 8-0 when the bats came alive, led by Liz Scheurich who went 3 for 3 with 5 RBIs.

Scheurich drove in Jackson Gutekunst and Julia Valluzzi in a four-run fourth inning. Entering the fifth, still trailing 8-4, Scheurich tripled with the bases loaded, scoring Brenna Davenport, Olivia Kapsambelis and Jackson Gutekunst to tie the game.

With Scheurich on third, Meg King singled up the middle for the game-winning RBI. Olivia Kapsambelis came in to relieve Julia Valluzzi with two outs in the first. Kapsambelis kept Memorial off the board scattering three hits and one walk.
