ZZ Top comes to the Verizon Wireless Arena

ZZ Top will bring its “Gang of Outlaws” tour to Manchester’s Verizon Wireless Arena at 7 p.m. Friday, May 25. Joining the Rock and Roll Hall of Famers will be 3 Doors Down and Gretchen Wilson.

With an lineup unchanged since 1969, ZZ Top singer and guitarist Billy Gibbons called his bandmates his “compadres,” adding, “They are great entertainers and amazing musicians. At a show, we never know what the other guy will be coming up with next. That can be a challenge, but it’s also pretty cool.”

ZZ Top’s brand of blues-based rock includes the hits “Sharp Dressed Man,” “Gimme All Your Lovin’?” and “Legs.”

As the band prepares for its appearance in Manchester, the talk has shifted to rumors of a new album, their first since 2003’s “Mescalero.” Another reason the record is eagerly anticipated is that the legendary Rick Rubin, the man responsible for reviving the careers of Johnny Cash and Neil Diamond, is at the helm.

“Rick’s got a special talent in assisting artists in reaching a little deeper and going back a little further,” Gibbons said last year during a break from recording. “We got 13 tracks delivered. (Rick) knows how to get me to work.”

Meanwhile, Gibbons suggested in a November interview that the record might appear this spring.

“Some of the fans are a little antsy,” Gibbons said. “It’s coming along … When you add up the days in the studio, it hasn’t allowed us much time to do much else than plug straight into an amp and play as a trio.”

In the interim, fans can revel in the riffs as ZZ Top premieres its new single, “I Got to Get Paid.”

For now, however, Gibbons said, “We’re really looking forward to working with the guys from 3 Doors Down and Gretchen, too, if we may borrow from the late, great Robert Johnson, clear those stones from the pass way on this phenomenal tour. The Gang of Outlaws is ready to ride.”

The Verizon Wireless Arena is located at 555 Elm St., Manchester. Tickets are $39.50-$69.50 and are available online at Ticketmaster.com, by phone at 1-800-734-3000 and at the Verizon Wireless Arena Box Office.
