Gas tanks gone, not forgotten

WILTON – Last week the last remnant of the gas stations that once lined Main Street was removed from in front of the former Draper’s Garage.

A large gas tank, which was installed about 20 years ago, was hoisted onto a truck leaving a large hole.

Guy Draper moved his business to the site about 1950 when he outgrew his spot in what is now Main Street Park. The building later housed the Wilton Telephone Company.

Following the death of Stuart Draper in 2006, the business was sold and the gas pumps removed soon afterward.

At one time there were five stations on Main Street plus a couple of pumps in front of the Pine Valley Store. There are now none and drivers have to go into the Pine Valley Section of Milford.

The garage building is now owned by a dealer in gold and silver jewelry.
