Town selectman appointed

LYNDEBOROUGH – Mark Chamberlain has spent the last couple of years serving on the town’s highway advisory and safety complex options study committee, so when he was asked if he’d fill the vacancy left on the board of selectman by the death of Lee Mayhew, he agreed.

“I think I have some experience that could help,” he said. “I don’t know if I have all the knowledge I’ll need, and I need to learn on the job and do the best I can.”

Besides, Chamberlain noted, “It’s only until March, and I’ll know by then if I can do it.”

Chamberlain has lived on Mountain Road for the past nine years. He is a native of Harrisville, a graduate of New Hampshire Technical Institute and is a civil engineer employed at The Dubay Group Inc., engineers, planners and surveyors, in Windham.

He has worked as a surveyor and has more than 30 years in subdivision site design and road improvement. He also is a former firefighter.

He sees Lyndeborough’s greatest need and challenge as road improvement, the upgrading of all the roads, gravel and paved. As a committee member, he “toured all of the roads in town” with former road agent Clayton Brown. They all need some attention, Chamberlain explained.

“We need to prioritize,” he said. “You’ve got to start somewhere, and if you are moving forward, that is the right direction … and the work needs to be done right the first time if you want it to last.”

His first job as a new selectmen will be “doing something about the Center Hall driveway.”

As far as a new safety complex goes, he said, “We’ve looked at a lot of concepts, tried to look at all of the options, discarded some ideas.”

The committee was not charged with finding a solution, he said, “but making some recommendations.” Those will be presented at the next town meeting.

“We are looking at a variety of options. Everything has an issue of some kind,” he continued.

For instance, a fire department substation in Lyndeborough Center, which he said is a good idea, has a big problem.

His goal as a selectman, he said, “is to make sure everything runs smoothly and keep everything in balance. I think I can work with Mark (Schultz) and Fred (Douglas).”

Chamberlain was interviewed and sworn in as a selectman Aug. 3. The next meeting of the board will be Wednesday, Aug. 16.
