Elder fraud: More than 200,000 scams and financial abuse cases targeting the elderly are reported to authorities every year, according to the website Comparitech, and that’s the tip of the iceberg. The estimates show $1.17 billion in damages are reported to authorities, but the real figure likely dwarfs that amount when factoring in unreported elder fraud, according to the website.

In New Hampshire, about 1,700 cases of elder financial fraud are reported each year – larceny, false pretenses, credit card/ATM fraud and impersonation. Since only about one in 23.5 cases are reported, that means there are an estimated 40,000 cases, with estimated loses of $139 million. The average loss per case is more than $2,000.

Drug arrests

AMHERST – In his quarterly report to selectmen, Police Chief Mark Reams said drug arrests are down significantly. On average there were 18 arrests for that quarter in the years 2016, 2017 and 2018 and only six for this quarter, “reflecting no reduced effort on our part,” the chief said at the board’s recent meeting.

Those numbers are in line with a recent report in the Nashua Telegraph on the opioid crisis in Nashua. The city continues to see declines in the number of reported overdoses and deaths attributed to opioids – 69 overdoses this year, a drop from 84 during the same period in 2018.
