MILFORD – Work will begin this summer on a pedestrian-bike path around Keyes Memorial Park, with eight exercise stations, said town Recreation Director Arene Berry. At the Monday night selectmen’s meeting the board voted to accept a donation of half the value of equipment, $7,396, from Exofit Outdoor Fitness Equipment.

AG cites roofing company

CONCORD – The owner of Amherst Roofing in Amherst has been cited for unfair and deceptive practices related to his business. Tyler Thomson allegedly took deposits from consumers for various roofing projects but failed to perform the services or refund the deposits, according to Attorney General Gordon J. MacDonald.

Between November 2018 and January 2019, the Consumer Protection Bureau investigated a number of complaints against Thomson and his business and he has entered into a consent judgment to resolve these allegations.

Under terms approved by the Merrimack County Superior Court on April 19, Thomson is prohibited from accepting any deposits or prepayments related to his roofing business for 10 years. Materials for contracted work must be purchased directly by the consumer and will be considered the property of the consumer.

Additionally, Thomson must repay $13,117 in deposits directly to consumers, with a payment schedule approved by the court, and provide proof of those payments to the bureau. Thomson will also pay $500 in civil penalties to the state once all restitution payments are made.

The Consumer Protection Bureau reminds consumers that home contractors in New Hampshire are not required to be licensed, and they should exercise due diligence before entering into contracts, especially those that require pre-work deposits.

Consumers with consumer-related complaints or concerns can call the Attorney General’s Consumer Information Line at 1-888-468-4454 or file a complaint online at http://doj.nh.gov/consumer/complaints/index.htm.

Coolidge in town

Tracy Messer, local historian, grant-writer and publicist, will portray President Calvin Coolidge at the rejuvenated Peterborough Book Fair on May 12, with a special appearance from noon to 2 p.m. at the Peterborough Community Center at 25 Elm St. Messer has portrayed President Coolidge at numerous venues in New England since his debut in April, 2017. In honor of the 275th anniversary of the Town of Peterborough and the 75th anniversary of Thornton Wilder’s Pulitzer Prizing winning play, Our Town, Tracy recently built a new walking tour mobile app, Explore Our Town: peterborough.oncell.com.

Messer believes that we cannot shape our own destiny without learning from our own experiences. As President Coolidge once said, “We review the past not in order that we may return to it but that we may find in what direction, straight and clear, it points into the future.”

Visitors to the Book Fair are encouraged to engage President Coolidge in conversation. Those who might test his memory by discovering a fact about himself that he himself might have forgotten in his old age may win a copy of “The Autobiography of President Coolidge.” The book will be available at the fair (which opens at 9 a.m.) before his arrival for those who might want to glean some facts. A winner, if any, will be chosen by drawing from visitors who are able to stump “silent Cal.” For more information about the fair, visit peterboroughpoetryproject.org on line.

How Deep Is A Mother’s Love?

As part of the continuing 40th anniversary celebration of the Milford Historical Society’s move into the Carey House, we are please to announce the event for the May Open House.

In a program prepared especially for Mother’s Day weekend, Denise Wright Fox will attempt to answer the question ” How deep is a mother’s love?’ During World War II, Denise’s grandmother Winifred Wright had 3 sons on active duty. Her deep love for them evolved into care and sympathy for all of Milford’s soldiers. Because of her efforts throughout the entire war, Mrs. Wright could truly be called “The Mother of Milford”. Denise will be speaking about the relationship between her father and grandmother and will be sharing their wartime correspondence.

We are honored that Denise chose this weekend to present her program. She will be at the museum on both Saturday and Mother’s Day Sunday from 2-4 p.m. What better way to spend some time with your mother than share such a heartwarming story of love with her?

The Carey House Museum is located at 6 Union St., Milford. Please use the accessible entrance on the driveway side of the building.
