Recycling center awarded $1,500 in grant funding

WILTON – In September, the Recycling Center entered a contest sponsored by the Northeast Resource Recovery Association (NRRA) for grant money up to $3,000. They tied for second place with Bristol and received $1,500.

Their entry noted changes made to accommodate COVID-19 requirements, which turned out to be the best made in the past few years, according to Manager Carol Burgess in a newsletter.

Spaces were opened up, pedestrian traffic flow was changed as was the techniques used in sorting recyclables. A table was removed and the trash platform lowered.

All materials used were salvaged wood and the center provided the labor.

The grant money will be to improve the collection area for glass, steel cans and aluminum beverage cans. A ramp will replace the steps at the end of the section and new “eye-catching” signs will be added.

The driveway and parking area paving project had been completed by Continental Paving, solving some drainage problems and providing a level area which will be much easier to plow. Lines will be added soon.

A new clothing collection sponsor, St. Pauly Textile, Inc., will replace the Planet Aid box. This organization distributes items world-wide. The collection box can be accessed by the ‘Y’ in the driveway on the way out.

New stickers will be produced in November. Stickers require proof of residency in one of the member towns.

The Recycling Center will be closed on Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Eve and Day, and New Years Day. It will be open on New Year’s Eve from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
