Ringo, a Brussels griffon, enjoys kayaking

Ringo is our 3½-year-old smooth-coat, Brussels griffon. He’s a very special dog.

To name Ringo, we got together as a family to put suggestions out on the table. My son, who loves the Beatles, had suggested “Ringo.” There were several great names to choose from, but after considering all our prospects, Ringo was the clear choice, and it fits.

As the runt of the litter, he’s always been small for his breed. At 4.6 pounds, he’s smaller than most cats, and cat-owners are quick to tell us that when they meet him.

Although small, he has a big personality. He out-paces bigger dogs in many aspects, but certainly not appetite.

He seems to prefer being around bigger dogs and is fearless to any other breed. He has such a confidence about himself.

Ringo is a quick-learner, very smart and obedient. He likes to show his “roll over” and “bang” (play dead) tricks, and he’s always up for a game of “fetch.”

Ringo loves the outdoors. Avid hikers will recognize him from walks on the local trails or hikes up Chicora, Jackson, Webster and Mount Washington (twice). He does all the hikes without assistance, which speaks to how agile he is. He’s always at our heels, and rarely wanders off except to give chase to the occasional chipmunk.

He also enjoys a day on the water, riding on the bow of our kayaks when we go for a paddle.

Ringo does some modeling for a national pet-supply chain, too. He can be seen in their catalogs sporting clothing, accessories and costumes.

He has a step-sister that we rescued, and they love each other dearly. They curl up together each day when they’re resting between playtimes.

I can’t think of a better dog. He is truly a joy to our family, and we cherish each moment we spend with him.
