A day to remember

Hollis and Brookline will hold Memorial Day celebrations.

BROOKLINE

Captain Samuel Douglass Academy will host a Memorial Day celebration, “Thank, Honor, and Remember Our Veterans,” at 9 a.m. May 25, at the school. The public is invited to attend.

The Brookline Memorial Day Ceremony will be held at 9:30 a.m. Monday, May 28, in front of Town Hall. The Hollis VFW will participate.

HOLLIS

The Hollis Memorial Post of the Veterans of Foreign Wars will host the annual Memorial Day ceremony on the Hollis Town Common. All town groups are invited to participate (Scouts, clubs, associations, etc.).

The VFW will provide U.S. flags at all the cemeteries, and wreaths and flowers for the monuments. All attendees are urged to respect the event and ceremony for what it is and instruct small children in proper etiquette and respect for those who are being remembered. The Hollis-Brookline Rotary will help decorate the cemeteries. The group will assemble at Brookdale Fruit Farm at 9 a.m. on May 26.

Hollis VFW will be distributing poppies and accepting donations from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday at the Hollis Transfer Station.

The town of Hollis and Hollis VFW will host the annual Memorial Day Ceremony on the Hollis Town Common beginning at 5:15 p.m. May 28 at the Town Common. All participants and attendees should assemble at 5 p.m. at the Town Common. Contact Jim Belanger at 465-2301 for more information.

The Eveready Engine House will be open for participants to view the “Veterans Wall” after the ceremony on the Town Common. Walk up to the Eveready Engine House after the ceremony on the Town Common and view the “Wall” of Hollis Veterans.

The following events will he held outdoors:

5:15 p.m. – Assemble the Color Guard, Memorial Park, Broad Street. All veterans are invited to assemble at Memorial Park with the VFW.

5:30 p.m. – VFW Chaplain reads the POW-MIA Prayer from podium on Town Common

5:32 p.m. – Setting of Wreaths by DAR – Scouts; re-enactment group fires Muskets at Memorial Park under direction of the Post commander.

5:35 p.m. – Assembly (Post marches to Town Common). After musket firing, the Town Band plays marching music, at Town Common. Opening remarks by VFW Post MC, National Anthem by the Hollis Town Band, invocation by the Rev. Agapit Jean of St. John Neumann Church, “God Bless America” by the Hollis Town Band, guest speaker Rep. Richard Drisko.

6 p.m. – The VOD, DAR and VFW essay contest winners will be announced; armed forces salute by the Hollis Town Band.

6:15 p.m. – Historical narrative.

6:30 p.m. – Firing of volleys by the Hollis VFW, “Taps” by the Hollis Town Band, Benediction by Father Aggie.

6:45 p.m. closing remarks by Hollis selectmen, and music by the Hollis Town Band.

In case of inclement weather, the ceremony will take place at the Hollis Lawrence Barn Community Center on Depot Road at 5:30 p.m. The indoor ceremony will be held one-half hour later than the outdoor ceremony. if event is held indoors, the 3rd NH Regiment re-enactors will not perform.

A day to remember

The American Legion invites all to the Merrimack Memorial Day Parade on Monday, May 28.

The parade will begin at 11 a.m. from the Rite Aid parking lot north on Daniel Webster Highway.

Wreath-laying ceremonies will be performed at the Fraser Square Monument. The parade will then continue west on Baboosic Lake Road to the Civil War Monument in front of The First Congregational Church and on to The Last Rest Cemetery, where Memorial Day services will be conducted.

After the services, the parade will continue on Baboosic Lake Road to The Merrimack American Legion, Post 98, parking lot to salute the colors. Refreshments will be served at the Post. At 1 p.m., the parade will proceed to the VFW to place plaques with the veterans names who have died in the past year on the Wall of Honor.
