Hollis students share stories at Open Mic

Hollis Primary School hosted a young authors’ celebration June 6.

Twenty-seven students in second and third grades, who are part of the after-school writing club, celebrated their newly published anthology, “Poems and Short Stories from Turtle Island.”

Each student read his or her original piece to family and friends. At the conclusion of the readings, the authors autographed copies of the book.

The students attended weekly meetings throughout the year, where they worked on a variety of writing skills. They came to share their thoughts, ideas and enthusiasm for writing, and to practice the process of writing.

Reading teacher Mrs. Bernard and second-grade teacher Miss Delisle instructed the students in their writing process as they worked on word choice, metaphors and similes, imagery, point of view and sensory details.

The book includes stories of a Brave Blueberry, Plants vs. Electronics and a Food Fight, as well as poems of Water Dragons, Pencil, and Sunset, to name a few.
