Libraries challenge readers to ‘Dream Big’ this summer

Brookline

This year’s program at the Brookline Library runs through Aug. 3. The theme is “Dream Big: Read!” or “Own the Night” will be featured in many of the events and programs.

To register for the Summer Reading Program, children can sign up at the library and collect a packet including instructions on how to participate, reading logs, a calendar of events, and information on registering for events and activities. Prizes, including Toadstool Book Shop gift certificates, will be awarded to participants who read the most pages or books during the six weeks. Parents can register their children during library hours through the end of the program.

All children who have a library card are eligible to participate. Children applying for a library card must be at least 5 years old, and children 18 and younger require a parent’s signature on the application form.

Reading choices are available for every level reader, from picture books to young adult selections, including the 2012-13 New Hampshire Youth Book awards nominees: Ladybug (preschoolers through third grade), Great Stone Face (grades 4 through 6), Isinglass (grades 7 and 8), and The Flume (grades 9-12). Other selections include books reviewed by Brookline Library staff, children’s book periodicals, including Horn Book and School Library Journal, and nationwide children’s librarians from public and academic libraries.

Brookline Library events include:

? June 30, 10-11 a.m. – Magician Norman Ng, at Brookline Town Hall. For all ages. After the performance, Ng will hold a magic workshop from 11 a.m.-noon for children ages 7 and older. Free, sign-up required.

? July 12, at 10:30 a.m. – Lindsay Bezich and her Puppet Pals. For ages birth to 8. Free, sign-up required.

? July 12, 19 and 26 at 6 p.m. – Thursday Night Kids Crafts. For ages 6 and older. Free, sign-up required.

? July 19, at 10:30 a.m. – Story Time with TD Banknorth. For early elementary ages. Hear stories chosen for their message on the importance of saving money. Read 10 books, earn 10 Bucks. Free, no registration necessary.

? July 23, at 2 p.m. – Art with Kristine Brock. For ages 6 -13. Free, sign-up required.

Hollis

Children and adults can sign up for Hollis Social Library’s Summer Reading Programs. The theme is “Dream Big: Read!” The library has programs for grade 1, grades 2-5, and grades 6-12. Sign up to win prizes all summer simply by reading.

The library will be hosting free programs and performers all summer. Informational, craft and story time programs will also be offered for children, teens and adults. Stop into the library to get a brochure.

? July 2 at 11 a.m. – Critters N’ Creatures: Dream Big animal show, at Lawrence Barn.

? July 9 at 11 a.m. – Simon Brooks Story Teller in the Library Meeting Room.

? July 16 at 11 a.m. – Go for the Stars Space Robot Program, at Lawrence Barn.

? July 23 at 11 a.m. – Tracy Kane The Fairy House Lady: Please bring natural materials to make a fairy house. Held at Lawrence Barn.

? July 30 at 11 a.m. – Abra-kid-dabra Magic Show, at Lawrence Barn.

? Aug. 6 at 11 a.m. – Steve Blunt Music Show, at Lawrence Barn.

? Aug. 13 at 11 a.m. – Critters N’ Creatures: Creatures of the Night Animal Show, at Lawrence Barn.

? Aug. 20 from 1-2:30 p.m. – Ice Cream Social. Summer Reading certificates and prizes will be given out. Hollis Firefighters will be there with their truck. Drop-in program. Held at Lawrence Barn.

Summer Reading Library volunteers needed:

The Hollis Social Library is in need of volunteers for its Summer Reading Program, which began June 27.

People ages 14 and older are needed to help prepare and run programs this summer for children. Help is needed for:

? Tuesday Summer Stories and Crafts – Volunteers needed to help cut out story time crafts, read stories, and run craft table after stories.

? Harry Potter Birthday Party July 31 – Volunteers needed to set up and organize, make food, and help with games and crafts.

? Friday Baby Yoga Classes – A volunteer(s) is needed who loves babies and has some knowledge of the subject.

? Ice Cream Social Aug. 20 – Volunteers needed to help scoop ice cream and toppings.

For adults

In keeping with the 2012 Summer Reading theme of nighttime, the adult program is called “Between the Covers.” The program is for anyone 18 or older and runs through Aug. 20. There will be four raffles drawn every two weeks – July 9 and 23, and Aug. 6 and 20. At the end of the program, the person who reads the most books will be awarded a new Nook Simple Touch with glow light.
