Rotary Club awards eight scholarships

As has been the annual tradition, the Hollis Brookine Rotary Club awarded scholarships to graduating Hollis Brookline High School seniors who were recognized for academic achievement, community involvement, leadership, extracurricular activities and personal achievement. This year, because of the increased response from qualified applicants, the Rotary Club has increased the number of $1,000 scholarships awarded from five to eight.

The recipients of the Hollis Brookline Rotary Club student scholarship for this year are Bailie de Lacy, Rachel Duprez, Felicia Lavery, Felicia Lombardi, Gwynne Noel, Laura Schmidt, Taylor Skilling and Isabel Starr.

The Rotary Club Chairman of the Excellence in Education Committee Krishna Mangipudi personally congratulated the winners and handed them their awards. Representatives of the Hollis Brookline Rotary Club Dick Miller, Venu Rao, high school Principal and Rotarian Cindy Matt were also on hand at the June 14 annual Awards Night.

In his address to students, Mangipudi spoke about Rotary International and its mission of service to local and international communities. He urged the college-bound seniors to seek out and get involved in the local Rotract clubs on campus; the Rotract Club is a youth program that was started in 1968 and has now grown into a major Rotary-sponsored organization of more than 9,030 clubs with 207,690 members around the world.

The Hollis Brookline Rotary Club is a local, civic organization made up of businessmen and women from surrounding communities.

The club’s mission is to serve the charitable interests of the local and global communities. Service work includes financial support, hands-on labor and foreign exchange.

The Hollis Brookline Rotary Club meets 7:15-8:30 a.m. Wednesdays from at the Brookline Auction Gallery, 32 Proctor Hill Road (Route 130), Brookline. Each year the club also holds several events to support its activities.
