Beaver Brook teacher to show artwork in Boston

A new watercolor by Edith Pucci Couchman, a teacher at Beaver Brook Association, in Hollis, and Infant Jesus School, in Nashua, has been selected for the Massachusetts Art Education Association’s annual juried summer exhibition in Boston: “Art Educators of Massachusetts.”

The painting, “Wangari Matthai, Jane Goodall and Vandana Shiva – Restoring the Tree of Life,” is a tribute to three of the 21st century’s most renown environmentalists. The exhibit, which runs through Sept. 14, weekdays, 9 a.m.-5 p.m., is taking place in the second floor gallery at the State Transportation Building, 10 Park Plaza, Boston.

Couchman has worked at Beaver Brook Association part time for more than 20 years, teaching art and environmental science to children. As someone who has been painting since she was a child, Couchman said art is an important way to communicate ideas and emotions in a visual context.

“Everyone is born an artist, it’s just a matter of finding a way to express ideas and emotions, because doing so is an important part of being human. Expressing art in a visual context allows one to express ideas, emotions, and values,” she said. “It’s wonderful being a teacher of art. I feel as though I am giving the children technique and helping them foster their inherent gifts. I greatly enjoy it.”

In addition to teaching, Couchman is also a self-employed artist.

“Many art teachers that I have come across are also practicing artists,” Couchman said.
