March composer plans to attend Hollis Apple Festival

The Hollis Apple Festival, sponsored by the Hollis Town Band and the Hollis Women’s Club, will be held 2-4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 2, in Monument Square.

In addition to apple crisp and apple pies served with Dr. Davis’ Ice Cream, the Hollis Town Band will perform.

One of the musical highlights of the festival will be the performance of two marches composed in the 1960s by Midwest composer Phillip G. Wilson. At the time, Wilson was a middle school band director and his daughter was a member of his band. The marches were rediscovered recently and made available for bands to perform through the efforts of Wilson’s daughter Dr. Millie Gore Lancaster.

The Hollis Town Band recorded these marches and sent them to Lancaster and Wilson, who said they were so delighted with the band’s performance that both are planning to attend the festival, along with other family members. This also is Wilson’s 80th birthday year.

In case of rain, the event will be held at Hollis Brookline Middle School.
