Police say calls were not scam

MERRIMACK – A suspected scam that drew several complaints last week from town residents is actually a legitimate fundraising drive by the state Veterans of Foreign Wars group, according to Merrimack Police.

Last week, several town residents complained of suspicious phone calls soliciting money on behalf of the VFW. One resident called organization’s Merrimack branch, and was told the organization was not running a fundraiser.

But Merrimack Police have since confirmed the VFW is running a statewide fundraising drive, according to Lt. Paul Trepaney.

Any questions about the campaign should be directed to the Veterans of Foreign Wars Department of New Hampshire at 224-7173.

With all telephone solicitations, however, residents should be careful about providing personal information, Trepaney warned in a department release.

“Do not be afraid to ask questions to determine the validity of any solicitation,” he said. “Any suspicious activity should be reported to police for further investigation.”

Merrimack Police can be reached at 424-3774.
