Joseph James Montanarella MD, 92, of Bedford, NH, died on August 30, 2014, at home in the presence of his family.

He was born the eldest child to Anthony and Angelina Montanarella (Lombardo) on July 15, 1922, in Rochester, NY. He was predeceased in 2011 by his loving wife, Beatrice, after 63 years of marriage. Dr. Montanarella is survived by his five children: Anthony of Elmira, NY; Mark of Coral Springs, FL; Paul of Phoenix, AZ; Mary Jo of Bedford, NH; and Catherine of Bedford, NH; 15 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.

He attended St. Michaels College of the University of Toronto, ON, Canada. He later served in the US Army as Sergeant and scout during WWII in Normandy. He subsequently graduated from medical school at the University of Ottawa and a radiology residency at the University of Rochester. For many years he served as president of the Chemung County Medical Society and Dept. Chairman of Radiology at Arnot Ogden Hospital and St. Joseph Hospital in Elmira, NY. He loved to teach anatomy to the nursing students and radiologic techs throughout his medical career. He enjoyed family time, reading, travel, chocolate and sports of all kinds but his true passion was golf, achieving two holes-in-one during his lifetime. Rarely was he ever seen without his golfing “bucket hat” outdoors!! Equally fun for him was keeping track of the accomplishments of his kids, grandkids and great-grandkids and the whereabouts of his Bisson, Nina. He was a communicant of St. Elizabeth Seton Church in Bedford.

Calling hours are Friday, Sept. 5, from 3 to 8 p.m. at 52 Pasture Lane in Bedford, NH. A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Saturday, September 6, at 10 a.m. at the Sacred Heart Church, 265 S. Main Street, Manchester. Committal prayers will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery in Bedford, NH.
