Francis J. Dutton Jr.
Mr. Dutton, 94, died Tuesday morning, March 29, at his home in Charlotte, NC. He was born on September 18, 1916, in Milford, NH, the son of Francis J. Dutton Sr. and Margaret Theresa O’Hanlon. The family moved to Columbia, SC in 1930. Mr. Dutton enrolled at the University of South Carolina, earning a BS in Business in 1938. While at USC, he was a member of the golf team, and later became a lifetime member of the Letterman’s Club. He was an ardent Gamecock fan all of his life.
He met his future wife, Catherine Narey, while in college. They were married in 1939. A veteran of World War II, Mr. Dutton served in the US Navy. He joined Standard Oil of New Jersey (Esso) in 1939 and relocated to Charlotte with Exxon in 1962. He retired after a 40 year career with the firm.
He was preceded in death by his wife of sixty years. Survivors include: Francis J. Dutton III (Cynthia), Catherine Dutton Long (Walter); grandchildren – T. Bartlett Yancey (Lindsay) of Charleston, SC, Caroline B. Yancey of Raleigh, NC, and Kathleen F. Dutton of Stillwater, OK.
The family will receive friends in the Narthex of St. Gabriel Catholic Church, on Thursday, 1:00-2:00 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow in the chapel at St. Gabriel, with the Reverend Frank O’Rourke officiating. Interment will occur at St. Peters Catholic Church in Columbia, SC.
The family would like to extend their gratitude to the caregivers from Visiting Angels Living Assistance Services, and to the doctors and nurses at Hospice Palliative Care for the care provided Mr. Dutton.
