Carl E. Doane

Carl E. Doane, a resident at Summerhill Assisted Living in Peterborough, died September 27, 2011. He was born in Swampscott, MA on June 14, 1915. The son of Earnest and Ethel Weber Doane, he was predeceased by brothers John and Paul.

He graduated from Bridgewater High School and eventually moved to New York City, where he met his wife of 69 years, Dorothy. At the outbreak of World War II he enlisted in the Seventh Regiment in Manhattan. He served proudly in the Army, quickly rising to the office of Captain and served in the European theater as a General’s Aide.

In 1946 he and Dorothy moved to Amherst, NH, where they raised their five children and lived for the next 54 years. He was an active member of the community, serving on several boards and was an annual participant in the P.T.A. theater productions and loved to sing. He was employed by Nashua Corporation for 35 years as National Sales Manager. Upon retirement he enjoyed restoring vintage Jaguars and traveled across the country participating in auto shows and competitions.

In 2000 the Doanes moved to Peterborough, where Carl became a devoted member of and daily visitor to the Wellness Center at Monadnock Community Hospital. He loved Peterborough and thoroughly enjoyed his remaining years there.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy and children, Susan Callihan of Peterborough, Paul Doane of Manchester, Robert Doane of Peterborough and Mary Doane of Keene. He was predeceased by son Christopher Doane of Manchester. His grandchildren are Seana and Saya Cullinan, Wesley and Michaela Doane and step-grandchildren Jeni and Jessi Callihan and Hayden Draper. He was predeceased by granddaughter, Michelle Doane.

He died peacefully surrounded by his loving family and the caring staff at Summerhill Assisted Living. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Wellness Center at Monadnock Community Hospital. There will be a private, family celebration of his life.
