Milford shuts out ConVal

Erin Tyrrell pitched a complete game Monday to lead the Milford High School softball team to a road win over ConVal, the defending Division II champions.

Tyrrell struck out 11 while allowing three hits, a walk and a hit batter. Catcher Julie Mazzeo went 3 for 4 at the plate with a double, two runs scored and a stolen base, while Jenn Dupuis had a double, a steal and also scored twice.

Jen Carson also drove in two runs with two successful suicide squeezes, the second of which came with the bases loaded in the top of the sixth. Kaitlyn Nelson followed with a two-run base hit as part of a four-run inning against ConVal’s Courtney Fisher (11 strikeouts).

ConVal threatened to get on the board in the bottom of the seventh, but Tyrrell stepped up and got the Spartans out of the jam.

Milford plays Wednesday at Oyster River, which had lost 98 consecutive games going into its season opener.
