Bedford students earn top history honors

Sixteen students from Ross A. Lurgio Middle School and Bedford High School participated in the New Hampshire National History Day competition at Plymouth State College.

National History Day is a year-long, research-based program where students investigate an historical topic of their choosing and display their knowledge through one of five possible formats: a paper, website, exhibit, documentary or performance.

Students analyze and evaluate a person or event of historical significance and relate it to the annual theme of the competition. The 2012 theme is “Revolution, Reaction and Reform.”

This year, six Bedford students have the opportunity to attend the national competition at the University of Maryland from June 10-14:

? Christian Bostrup, Molly Callahan and Nathan Raike, who won first place in the Junior Group Website with their entry “McCarthyism and the Red Scare.”

? Raica Mirza, Sabika Mirza and Rachel Wiggens, third-place winners in the Senior Group Exhibit with their entry “Mary Baker Eddy.”

Third place winner for the Junior Individual Website was William Barnhart, with his entry “Prohibition.”

The estimated cost for the team to attend the national competition is $5,600. Tax-deductible donations may be sent to Ross A. Lurgio Middle School, 47A Nashua Road, Bedford, NH 03110. Reference National History Day in the memo section.
