Bedford Eagle Scouts honored

On Sunday, May 20, a Troop 414 Eagle Scout recognition ceremony was held at Bedford Presbyterian Church for Patrick Hayward and Jonathan Reeks. About 100 people attended the ceremony, which took place in the church’s sanctuary, followed by a reception in Fellowship Hall.

After the ceremony, presentations were made by John Kroehler of VFW Post 8401 and state Sen. Ray White, who presented New Hampshire flags.

U.S. flags were presented to each Scout on behalf of U.S. Sen. Kelly Ayotte.

Patrick completed his Eagle Scout Leadership Service Project at Camp Allen in Bedford, a summer camp for adults and children with special needs. At Camp Allen, the screened-in porch was one of the campers’ favorite spots. Unfortunately, the screened-in porch was destroyed by a winter storm in 2011.

Patrick led a project to demolish the damaged screened-in porch and construct built-in benches on the existing deck. He organized a fundraiser at Sam’s Club, selling hot dogs, drinks and ice cream to raise the money to purchase the materials for the project. He coordinated 265 volunteer hours to complete the project. With the support of the Scouts and adults from Troop 414 and his family, Patrick was able to complete the project so that Camp Allen could enjoy the deck during their “Christmas in July” celebration and other activities during summer camp.

“I completed my Eagle Project for the Bedford Historical Society in the summer of 2010,” Jonathan said of his project. “They had expressed the need for decking to be constructed to connect School House 7 and the Kendall Shop Museum. A prior Eagle Project provided an access ramp, and they needed the connection to be able to walk between the buildings.

“After a fundraiser at Sam’s Club, selling hamburgers and hot dogs and with the generosity of Lowe’s in Bedford, my fellow Scouts and I removed the existing rotten decking and replaced it with more durable ‘tek’ flooring. With the help of Mr. Watson and Mr. Williams, we also replaced the outside door, threshold and sill. I thank everyone who was able to give of their time to help me complete this project.”
