Bruce Jacques returns to the Shaskeen Pub

Bruce Jacques will once again bring his unique brand of musical comedy to the Shaskeen Pub in Manchester at 9 p.m. Friday, July 20.

Imagine dueling pianos without the pianos, add one guy, music with backing tracks and a guitar, a splash of audience participation and a rollicking good time, and you get a rough idea of what Jacques does.

Originally from Fitchburg, Mass., Jacques is a staple in New England, from playing gigs on the college circuit to corporate events and weddings.

“My show is a combination of music sing-alongs, audience interaction and musical comedy with musical spoofs,” said Jacques. “I do musical spoofs of songs by Madonna, Britney Spears, Vanilla Ice, that sort of thing.”

And Jacques is committed to his art – whether it be donning a cowboy hat and sometimes riding a show attendee on Boys Don’t Cry’s “I Wanna Be A Cowboy,” to becoming Britney Spears, replete with pig tails and a school girl’s uniform for a parody of “Oops, I Did It Again.”

But fear not, Jacques said he isn’t crossing any lines of political correctness.

“For me, it’s more of a visual thing, and I don’t even re-write lyrics,” he said. “It’s more of a few sexual innuendos than anything else.”

Jacques’ repertoire includes staple barroom anthems – “Piano Man,” “American Pie,” among them. He also performs a popular ’80s medley of “hair band rock” and has a 6-foot LED screen behind him, flashing the lyrics to the songs so the audience can sing their hearts out.

“I just did some summer camps, where the ages were 14-18, and this week, I have a golf tournament coming up, where the median age will be 65 years old. And I’ll probably be doing a lot of the same kind of stuff, which will be weird,” said Jacques with a laugh.

Manchester’s Shaskeen Pub will bring a lot of return customers, so many a pub crawler “knows what goes on at one of my shows and are there ready to participate.”

Jacques began performing 28 years ago and said little has changed over the years.

“You know, this show developed slowly,” he said. “I started in my teens playing in rock bands and basically, bought a drum machine and a keyboard and laid tracks and essentially became a live DJ, playing weddings and such. But over the years, I started doing certain silly things and over the last 20 years, I just incorporated more silly stuff into the act.”

Jacques said he’s always trying to find new material.

“When ‘Call Me Maybe’ came out, everybody was freaking out about that song,” he said. “And I said, ‘That’s a girl song and I can’t sing that high.’ But after weeks of getting requests for it, I said, ‘I guess I have to do this song.’”

And as for any line that Jacques won’t cross musically, if it’s popular enough, he’ll do it.

“It’s all about making people happy,” he said. “And what can I say? I’m a musical whore. It they like it and want it, I’ll do it.”
