Manchester Community Theatre Players partner with New York City talent

William Shakespeare said, “All the world’s a stage.”

That’s certainly true for the Manchester Community Theatre Players, who are bringing actors from New York City to present a different Shakespeare play each week.

“Our role is producing for this particular program,” said MCTP Artistic Director Dr. Allen Kaplan. “We have received grant money, which allows us to offset the cost and host the Theatre Under the Stars theater company at our outdoor theater.”

MCTP is at the Jewish Federation Theatre, 698 Beech St., Manchester. MCTP is a local theater company that serves the greater Manchester area. Founded in 2005, MCTP was created to encourage children and adults of all skill levels to participate in the arts and theatre. MCTP is an offshoot of the Palace Theatre in Manchester and is intended for smaller artistic projects that can’t fill the 900 seats at the Palace.

Theatre Under the Stars theatre company is a group of professional actors and actresses from across the world, primarily from New York City, and is based out of New Hampshire’s Waterville Valley. The group is New Hampshire’s only professional outdoor classical theater company, and it travels across the state to various summer festivals and outdoor community theaters to bring family-friendly entertainment.

According to the Theatre Under the Stars website, the company’s mission is to “put the ‘shake’ back in Shakespeare (and other classics).”

“Theatre Under the Stars is made up of two different companies. One is a group of professionals, and the other is a group of their students aspiring to become professionals,” Kaplan said. The July 18 show will be performed by the student company. “Last year’s student company performed just as good as the professionals,” Kaplan said.

On Wednesday, July 25, Theatre Under the Stars professional company will perform “Interactive Robin Hooddd,” and on Wednesday, Aug. 1, the company will perform “The Tempest.” For more coming Shakespeare plays at the MCTP, visit www.shakespeareinthevalley.com.

All plays will be held at 6 p.m. at the Jewish Federation, and admission is $5. Tickets may be purchased at the door.

“But for the financially challenged, people can pay as much as they can for admission,” Kaplan said. “The purpose is to bring professional theater talent to all people.”

On July 4, Theatre Under the Stars performed “The Taming of the Shrew.” According to Kaplan, after the second act, the cast was met with inclement weather.

“So we just moved everyone to our indoor theater and finished the third act from there,” Kaplan said. “It’s great, because people can bring lawn chairs and picnic dinner and watch professionals at our outdoor theater, and if it rains, we can always move inside.”

Coming this fall, MCTP will perform the critically acclaimed musical “Fiddler on the Roof,” directed by Kaplan, with musical direction by A. Robert Dionne. The show will be made up of actors and actresses from the greater Manchester community. All skill levels and ages are invited to audition from 1-4 p.m. Sunday, July 22, and 6-8 p.m. Thursday, July 26, at the Jewish Federation Theatre.
