Had The Telegraph held its Motor Mania classic car and motorcycle show on the originally scheduled date of June 2, it would had to have been reconfigured as a boat show.

Heavy downpours prompted the event to be rescheduled for a drier time of year.

“We decided to move it to the summer to hopefully get out of the rainy season,” said Kimberly Lencki, The Telegraph’s events manager.

Motor Mania will be held from 3-7 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 4, at The Telegraph grounds in Hudson. A portion of the registration fees will be donated to Greater Nashua Habitat for Humanity.

Lencki and others involved with Motor Mania used the additional time to expand and refine the event. The biggest change is that it will be more family-friendly.

“Our focus is still on the classic cars and motorcycles,” but activities that will appeal specifically to children have been added, Lencki said, “so the dads and the moms can fully enjoy every moment at Motor Mania.”

Two bounce houses are being donated by Jump Around Inflatables, of Merrimack. Home Depot will provide a generator to keep the bounce houses inflated and is planning a building workshop geared toward children.

In a move that will please both the young and the young at heart, Home Depot will also be running a dunk tank to raise money for Greater Nashua Habitat for Humanity.

Most likely, it will be Home Depot’s store manager taking the plunge, but other names have been mentioned.

“I teased Terry about dunking the publisher,” Lencki said of The Telegraph’s publisher, Terry Williams, “so maybe we can get him on board.”

Attendees who would like to commemorate their afternoon at Motor Mania with a family picture can arrange for a sitting with Nashua illustrator and caricaturist Anna Croteau.

Croteau will charge $10 per drawing, a portion of which she will donate to Greater Nashua Habitat for Humanity.

DJ Bernie Del Llano of Perfect Entertainment will provide the appropriate musical atmosphere for the event, focusing on songs from the “’50s and ’60s to get everyone in the classic, vintage mood,” Lencki said.

Del Llano will hold a number of quick and easy contests throughout the day. Winners will receive tickets to Chunky’s Cinema Pub, which has a location in Nashua.

The Nashua Police Department will bring a bit of excitement to Motor Mania by displaying its SWAT team armored truck and bomb squad team truck, both of which will be opened up for more complete viewing.

Some fun for the grown-ups has also been added. Souhegan Valley Motorsports and DGN Motorsports will offer test rides of the Can-Am Spyder and Victory motorcycles, respectively.

“If someone wants to test ride either vehicle, they just have to have their license with them so we can photocopy it,” Lencki said.

No changes have been made to the core components of Motor Mania. Participants will still compete for first and second place in nine categories: Best Antique Car, Best Street Rod, Best Muscle Car, Best Foreign Car, Best Sports Car, Best Truck, Best Classic Car, Best Custom Car and Special Interest.

There will also be awards for Best in Show and Best Motorcycle.

The above categories will be judged by the same panel as at the 2011 event: automotive airbrush muralist Dave Dapkus; Bill Allen, who recently retired as owner of Bill Allen’s Yesteryear Specialties, an automobile restoration and customization business; and Chris Laurencio, an IT professional with a lifelong passion for rare and modified cars who has hosted numerous car shows and related events.

A People’s Choice Award will be determined by Motor Mania attendees, and the Publisher’s Pick will be chosen by Williams and Opinion Editor Nick Pappas.

Those wishing to participate in the pre-event cruise-in should start lining up at noon at Granite Clover Self-Storage at 6 Caldwell Drive in Amherst, just over the Nashua line. The cruise-in will depart at 1 p.m., making its way to The Telegraph grounds.

“We’ll be working our way down Amherst Street, weaving through downtown and then cutting over to Hudson,” Lencki said.

Those who prefer not to take part in the cruise-in but still want to display their vehicles can start setting up at The Telegraph grounds at 1 p.m.

The long-awaited winner of a new 2004 Honda NSR50 bike, courtesy of Best Ford Lincoln and Best Cycle Center in Nashua, will also be determined at the event. The raffle, which is still open, began in late spring, with the winner to have been named at Motor Mania’s original date in June.

Depending on how this year’s rescheduled event is received, Motor Mania may have found a new home on the local calendar.

“For this particular event, we thought August made the most sense because it’s right in the middle of the car showing season,” Lencki said of how the rescheduled date was chosen.

On the post-event survey distributed to attendees, she said, there will be a question regarding the rescheduled date. If enough positive feedback is received, Motor Mania may become an August event.
