Digging Up Dinos

HOLLIS – Ancient reptiles were found and dug up by some little paleontologists at the Hollis Social Library on Wednesday, Jan. 20.

For the program, run by Marcia Beckett, the youth program coordinator at the library, kids ages 8-12 were invited to do some "dino digging."

Beckett took tin pans and filled each with a mixture of soil, flour and salt in order to make a dirtlike mixture for the kids to play with. About 10 kids sat at a large table, and each had his or her own pan to play with. They were each distributed a dinosaur skeleton that they could hide within the dirt. Once their skeleton was hidden, they could switch with another person and try to find the skeleton that someone else hid. Kids used a variety of items, such as toothpicks and clothespins, to dig up their skeletons.

Beckett hung up pictures of a few different dinosaurs so the kids could look and see which ones they had dug up.

After they finished digging, it was time to make crafts.

Each child was given a paper plate to use to cut out the body. Beckett also provided paper arms and legs, as well as paint, to use to craft their choice of dinosaur.

The event was from 4-4:45 p.m. and was held in the meeting room, located next to the children’s room, of the library.
