PTA casting for ‘Under the Sea’

AMHERST – The Amherst Parent-Teacher Association is inviting kids and adults ‘under the sea’ for auditions for its 66th annual PTA play. In April 2018, the PTA will present Disney’s “The Little Mermaid” for its largest fundraiser, which generates upwards of $15,000 for vital curriculum enrichment programs and teacher grants for Amherst schools.

Auditions will take place from 6-9 p.m. on Jan. 2 and 3 at Wilkins Elementary in Amherst. Callbacks, if needed, will occur at the same time and place the following day, Jan. 4. This year’s production features nearly 30 named roles, including favorites such as Ariel, King Triton, the loveable Flounder and Sebastian and the voice-stealing villainess, Ursula. Dozens of ensemble roles will also be cast.

Auditions are open for all adults, as well as students in the third grade or older. Second-graders can showcase their skills if there is an auditioning parent. Family participation is welcomed and encouraged for this collaborative effort that benefits the kids of the Amherst community. Auditions are not limited to Amherst residents, and aspiring actors across the region are encouraged to attend.

The all-volunteer production is also in search of backstage talent. Creative minds are needed for set and costume design, puppeteers, crafters, organizers and much more.

Rehearsals for the spring production begin Sunday, Jan. 7 at Wilkins Elementary. Lead roles will be called Thursdays and Sundays while ensemble roles will typically rehearse only during the weekend session. The show’s five-performance slate runs Thursday, April 12 to Sunday, April 15 at Souhegan High School in Amherst.
