HUDSON – There will likely be new owners of The Cabinet and its sister paper, the daily Telegraph of Nashua, plus The Cabinet Press’ three other weeklies – the Hollis Brookline, Bedford and Merrimack Journals.

The Cabinet and Telegraph’s parent company, Independent Publications Inc., has put the newspapers up for sale, Telegraph publisher Terrence L. Williams announced last week.

The publications company, based in Pennsylvania, has also put its other holdings on the market, including other newspaper publications. But despite the many questions surrounding the sale, the papers will not change their roles in the communities they serve, Williams said.

“Our expectation is that we will continue to be the voice for the greater Nashua area. That’s the way we’re moving forward,” Williams said of the papers.

Independent Publications Inc., led by the McLean family of Bryn Mawr, Penn., has owned The Telegraph for more than three decades and purchased The Cabinet Press papers in 2005.

Williams expressed his appreciation to IPI and to the McLean family ownership for its investment in The Telegraph and community through the McLean Contributionship.

He said the family patriarch, the late William L. McLean III died in 2011, and the family decided a few months ago to shut down IPI, which dates to 1895.

This fall, IPI sold its several Muzak franchises, which produce commercial music and sound systems for businesses. And, on Friday, company officials announced the sale of the assets of McLean Communications Inc., the Telegraph’s sister company, to the owners of Yankee Magazine, based in Dublin.

Difficult decision

McLean Communications is the publisher of New Hampshire Magazine, New Hampshire Home, New Hampshire Business Review and Parenting New Hampshire.

“The decision (to sell), I’m sure, was a difficult one for the McLean family. We have benefited under their ownership” Williams said. “The late Bill McLean … was a wonderful, supportive, benevolent owner who cared greatly about his companies, and, in particular, The Telegraph.”

Looking forward, company officials expect to complete the Telegraph-Cabinet sale quickly, settling on a buyer within several months, Williams said.

Meanwhile, The Telegraph will continue to publish its daily and weekly publications, and to expand its website, nashuatelegraph.com.

“We have an excellent business plan for 2013,” Williams said Friday. “It’s achievable, and we’re looking forward to getting to work on it.”
