SHS FIRST robotics team registration set

Souhegan High School’s FIRST robotics team will conduct student registration for the upcoming 2014-15 season Wednesday, Sept. 17, in the SHS Learning Center at 6:30 p.m.

Dean Kamen founded For Inspiration & Recognition of Science & Technology in 1989 to inspire students to pursue careers in engineering and the sciences.

The FIRST robotics program uses the excitement of a sporting competition to expose students to the inspiring career possibilities of engineering, mathematics, and science.

THE FIRST robotics program gives students the opportunity to work shoulder-to-shoulder with professional engineers solving a complex problem saddled with many competing cost and time constraints.

Students get first-hand experience exercising life skills, such as working as a team to achieve a common goal, decomposing a complex task into manageable activities, practicing time management skills and overcoming adversity through systemic problem solving. Students gain exposure to strategic planning, working with tools to fabricate parts, assembling and wiring the robot, writing software programs to control the robot, and marketing and fund raising.

Last year, the team won the Granite State District and was awarded the General Motors Industrial Engineering Award. For more information on the SHS Robotics Team and the FRC competition, visit the team’s website at www.robotics138.org.
