Community Center event draws crowd

WILTON – The Community Center’s third annual gathering to create “stone soup” in Main Street Park drew over 25 people on Saturday.

Sandy Lefleur dropped in the “magic stone,” a fist-sized egg-shaped river rock, which, witnesses agreed, sank. Had it floated, it would have boded ill for the project. She said it had created soup in a dozen different places.

Each participant provided a vegetable chopped and ready for the pot, including summer squash, carrots, potatoes, onions, red and yellow peppers, celery, broccoli, and parsley, as well as two kinds of pasta. “Stone Soup” is vegetarian, so a separate pot of meats was provided. The committee added lemonade, a variety of breads and homemade desserts.

Donna Crane read a modern retelling of the old European folktale of how a community can achieve great things if each contributes a little. She noted that “every child here is reading a book,” a tribute to the “Little Free Library” located at one side of the park.

The event was sponsored by the Wilton Community Center which was created to provide cultural, educational, recreational and social opportunities for all ages. The current president is Donna Crane. Contact through the town website.
