As heavy winds whipped smoke in all directions, Amherst Fire Lt. Darren Schriever manned a ladder truck that aimed water at an Amherst house Monday afternoon. Several area fire departments, including Bedford, Mont Vernon, New Boston and Milford joined Amherst Fire Rescue in responding to the two-alarm blaze. The Colonial-style single-family house is located on Parkhurst Drive, off Horace Greeley Road, at the end of a cul-de-sac and up a long, steep driveway. It appeared to be a total loss. There are no hydrants in the heavily-wooded area, and firefighters had to draw water from a brook branching out from Damon Pond.
