Craft brewery planned at 12 South St., Milford

MILFORD – A small brewery is planned for the building on South Street that had been home for many years to Bravo Pizza and more recently Marcus P’s restaurant.

Last week the planning board unanimously approved a change of use for William Oger, of Ogie Brewing LLC, for 12 South St.

Oger plans to manufacture and sell bottles and kegs and have a tasting room that seats 34, with standing room.

On May 2 the zoning board of adjustment was scheduled to hear a request from Oger for a special exception because the operation involves manufacturing in a commercial zoning district.

There will be no food sold, because a nanobrewery license doesn’t require it, said Oger who told the planning board he’ll address the parking issue on his website. Board members told him there are usually spaces within easy walking distance.

There was no public comment at the April 23 meeting and the board’s vote to approve it was unanimous with the condition that the owner arrange for disposal of waste materials with the town water and sewer department.

The grain byproduct of beer manufacture can be used as animal feed or made into compost, he said, and board member Janet Langdell suggested Oger reach out to local farmers.

Nanobreweries are defined as those that produce no more than three barrels of beer in one batch.

According to aboutamericancraftbeer.com, New Hampshire law now defines them as breweries that produce less than 2,000 barrels annually.

There are a number of small breweries in New Hampshire. Milford had Pennichuck Brewing Company, at 127 Elm St. on what is now town recreation land, but it closed about 10 years ago.
