Milford ZBA continues brewery review

MILFORD – William Ogert will have to do more research on mitigating potential odors from the beer-making operation he wants start on South Street.

The Milford Zoning Board of Adjustment will continue its review of the Ogie Brewery at its next meeting, on June 6, to allow Ogert to look into ways of reducing odors and dealing with waste products.

Ogert, of Nashua, plans to make and sell bottles and kegs and also have a tasting room in the space most recently occupied by Marcus P’s restaurant. He needs a special exception from the ZBA because a brewery is considered manufacturing and the site, 12 South Street, is in a commercial zone.

Neighbors had expressed concerns about smells and also about waste storage, though Ogert had said he would work with local farmers who would want waste products for animal feed or compost for soil improvement.

Ogert’s plan is to produce two to four barrels a week in a “nanobrewery” defined as one that makes no more than 2,000 barrels a year.

The tasting room would be open on weekends and offer one four-ounce sample of each label and one 16-ounce pour per person, per day. The rest would be delivered to bars and restaurants.

Ogert told the ZBA earlier this month that “craft breweries tend to become a town pride” and connoisseurs tend to seek out and visit the new breweries.
