Interim chief out

WILTON – On Monday, the Select Board accepted the resignation of Interim Fire Chief Scott Thompson. A long-time member of the department, he was appointed to the position last year following the resignation of Chief Jim Culter.

The department will be managed for the next few months by deputy chiefs Don Nourse and Ron Caswell.

“We’ll miss you,” Board Chairman Kermit Williams told him. “The department will miss you.”

“And I’ll the guys,” Thompson said, “but it was a good opportunity.” He added, “And it’s warmer and the deer hunting is good.”

Williams offered thanks on behalf of the board and the town.

The future of the department will be decided by voters at town meeting on March 12.

After almost a year of planning, the department is asking the town to approve hiring a full-time fire chief.

“The town can no longer function with a part time chief,” Nourse said at a recent meeting. There is too much that is not getting done and there are few responders during the day.

The Select Board has voted to not recommend the article as being too expensive.

Nourse said they will have a power point presentation at town meeting.
