Helping the Environment

Heron Pond Elementary School recently installed a refillable water bottle station. The students in Suzanne Schedin’s Monarch 5 class researched the effects of plastic pollution on the environment and wanted to make a change in the community. Single-use plastic water bottles are harmful to the environment, so the class wanted to encourage everyone to use a refillable water bottle and stop using the single-use bottles. The students wrote and applied for a grant through Peace, Love & Planet, a nonprofit organization that supports student-led initiatives that address environmental concerns while enabling young people to become part of the solution while contributing positively to our community. This grant was used toward the purchase of a refillable water station for the school lobby. The class includes Genevieve Tripp, Maria Dudley, Madeline Mazzerall and Evan Lawson (who has moved). The students will continue their message of conservation by encouraging the school community to use refillable water bottles and fill them at the new water bottle station.
