Stagecoach Road to remained closed for bridge replacement

WILTON – Stagecoach Road will remain closed this summer while the bridge across the Burton Pond Outlet brook at the Burton Highway end is replaced. Work must be completed by Sept. 3, but is expected to be completed sooner. Work began on the bridge last week.

The bridge, which has been on the state’s Red List of bridges with restrictions for several years, will be replaced by a pre-cast arch. The bridge’s timber decking had deteriorated to a point where the bridge was considered unsafe.

The timber has been claimed by a resident who will turn it into benches to be donated to the town.

Cost of the replacement is estimated at $750,000, with $600,000 coming from the state bridge aid program and the remainder from the town’s bridge replacement fund. Replacement of the bridge was approved at the 2020 Town Meeting.

The delivery of the bridge will create a short-term closure of Burton Highway.

A detour of about 1.2 miles via Davisville Road and Burton Highway is in place for Stagecoach Road.

Information can be found on the town’s website.
