Purgatory Falls reopens

LYNDEBOROUGH – In keeping with the state guidelines, the Purgatory Falls Conservation Areas will reopen, but with parking restrictions.

At the Lower Falls, parking on Purgatory Road will be limited to one side where cars can get completely off the pavement. More signage will be added.

At the Upper Falls, there is no parking on Purgatory Falls Road. Attendance there is limited to the four or five spaces at the trailhead. The road is gravel, narrow, and a dead-end which could cause problems for emergency vehicles.

At the meeting of the Select Board on June 2, Chairman Fred Douglas said the closure a year ago “was a two-fold issue. We closed partly because of the trash.” He also noted illegal camping and fires in the area.

Both areas were cleaned by a volunteer group from Milford, he said, “for which we thank them.” However, he added, “If it gets bad, I would consider closing it again. This is a carry in – carry out kind of place.”

Road Agent Mark Chase said he has solved the problem of signs being stolen by placing them in cement.

In other business on Wednesday, Town Clerk Trish Schultz said her office is now open to the public.

Budget Committee Member Geoffrey Allen has volunteered to serve on a committee looking into restoring the Swap Shop at the Recycling Center.

Updating the town’s Class VI Road Policy is under discussion.

The new highway department truck was due to arrive in town on June 3.
