WLMHS’s Peter Weaver named SAU 63 interim superintendent

WILTON – The School Board has named Peter Weaver, current principal of Wilton Lyndeborough Middle/High School, interim superintendent of SAU 63. His one-year appointment will begin on July 1. Assistant Principal Sarah Edmunds will serve as principal during that time.

A native of the Philippines, Weaver graduated from Shippensburg College in Pennsylvania with degrees in government studies and public administration. He received his teaching certification from Providence College in history and Special Education, and has a Certificate of Advanced Graduate Studies from UNH.

His background includes serving as principal at Spaulding High School in Rochester for three years. He has been an assistant principal, taught social studies and worked in special education.

“I always saw myself as a government administrator,” he said on Monday. “But I guess school administrator is being that.”

He sees rebuilding the school’s partnership with the community as the most pressing need.

“We need to reconnect with each other,” he said. “Get families back in here. We have been physically and emotionally disconnected. Sometimes you have to re-boot the engine.”

He added, “Our goal is to pay attention to our performances. Are our kids being successful? If they aren’t, what can we do?”

He would like to see the district’s three schools – Lyndeborough Central (kindergarten. and pre-school), Florence Rideout Elementary (grades one through five), and the middle/high school – seen as one entity. “How things are connected, the curriculum, the standard tests, everything all working together. We need to work on integrating.”

While serving as superintendent will be interesting and challenging, he said, “I enjoy being the building principal. I believe in this district. We’re moving forward and I want to be part of it. I’ll try to not let the community down.”

There are about 300 students in the middle/high schools. “It’s a nice size. It doesn’t get overwhelming,” and he can know all of his students.

The school board and a search committee spent the past year searching for a replacement for retiring Superintendent Bryan Layne. That search was hampered by the pandemic and several of their finalist choices fell through. Weaver was the unanimous choice of the board to serve as interim while the search for a permanent person continues.

Weaver lives in Concord.
