Garcia raising fund to establish local scholarship

WILTON – DJ Garcia said he wants to “bring awareness of the school to the community,” and to do that he is raising money to establish an annual scholarship.

On Saturday, Oct. 9, beginning about 10:30 a.m., Garcia, owner of Wilton House of Pizza, will offer a special $5 menu at the store. “And we’ll match every food item for the scholarship.”

He is also proposing a donation of $2.50.

The idea grew out of a conversation with Superintendent Peter Weaver, he said. “I do a podcast, and we had a long conversation about everything. Peter’s trying to build a partnership between the school and the community.”

Weaver has experience in restaurants, Garcia said, “and we’ll ask him to do some cooking.”

Garcia added, “My personal goal is $1,000 for the scholarship. We’ll do this (event) several times during the year and present the scholarship at graduation. I want to make this an annual presentation.”

“So come on in,” Garcia. “No purchase necessary, just come and talk to the superintendent.”

The scholarship could possibly go to a student interested in the hospitality business, Garcia said.
