Officials look to clean up streets through new program

WILTON – The Community Center is sponsoring an adopt-a-road plan to clean up the town’s streets and roads.

Member Sara Spittel has organized a road adoption program to run from April 16 to April 30. She said she noticed that the state highways were part of a state-wide effort and adapted that plan for the town, creating a spread sheet and contacting people through various town boards..

Last week she said about 80 percent of the town’s streets and roads had been “adopted,” that is about 52 miles, and was hoping for 100 percent.

Clean-up can be done at any time during that period.

Several organizations are taking part, she said. The Lions Club has adopted Route 31 south to the Greenville line, and the Fire Department has adopted Route 101 from the Temple line to Route 31,

Blue trash bags will be provided for participants and can be picked up at the town hall, Recycling Center, or the library. Filled bags can be dropped off at the Recycling Center during regular hours. Anyone needing assistance can text 603-930-0768.

Both schools will be taking part in the effort on Friday, April 22 from 8:15 to 11 a.m. in honor of Earth Day.

According to Assistant Principal Kathryn Gosselin, groups will be working downtown along Main, Prince, Russell, and Pine Valley streets and Clark Court.

Seniors and members of the National Honor Society will be at the elementary school to assist the youngest ones, and high school juniors will be at Lyndeborough Central School to assist the kindergartners.

Middle School students will clean up the school grounds.
