Wilton-Lyndeborough Cooperative student Eric Fish helps to restore historic Ward War II plaque

WILTON – The former Sacred Heart Church had a plaque honoring parishioners who served in World War II. When the church closed in 2010, that plaque was removed. It was found recently in the basement of the home of the late Lee Tuttle by Justin Harrington of Clean-Outs by Jason.

Milford resident Jay Duffy recognized the value of the plaque, both historically and sentimentally. “It looked like it had been torn off the wall,” he said.

Duffy contacted the Industrial Arts program at the Wilton-Lyndeborough Cooperative High School.

Teacher Daniel Manning got excited. “This is the sort of thing I want to do,” she said. The plaque represents a piece of history students should be more aware of.”

A group of seniors took on the restoration project.

“This fits in with our program to get the school more involved in the community,” Assistant Principal Kathryn Gosslin said. “Bridge the gap between town and school.”

The wooden eagle at the top of the plaque was missing a wing. Student Eric Fish carved a new one.

“We haven’t decided if we will paint it to match the old,” Manning said. “There is the symbolism of the repair. We’re still considering.”

When the honor roll is restored, it will be presented to American Legion Post 10 with all proper ceremony.
