Officials discuss dog leashing at New Reservoir on Sand Hill Road

WILTON – The majority of the dozen people attending a hearing prior to the Select Board meeting on Monday, June 20, on use of the New Reservoir on Sand Hill Road agreed that while dogs are welcome, they should be leashed, especially in the restricted beach area. A proposal has been made to allow dogs off leash early in the morning and in the evening.

Conservation Commission Member Jennifer Beck said the beach area is very small and most of the area in trails. There are other places where “you can throw sticks into the water for the dog.”

Resident Felice Fullam asked about water testing and a management plan for the area. “Who will monitor and manager it?”

Beck said water is tested and a management plan is being compiled.

Selectman Chairman Kermit Williams agreed the plan needed “to be modified” and no decision was made on the leash law.

The hearing had been called to discuss changed to the town parking ordinance to limit the new parking lot on Isaac Frye Highway to Wilton residents.

A straw poll taken at Town Meeting in March indicated people wanted the restriction.

Resident Tom Schultz said that wouldn’t solve the parking problem om Isaac Frye or Sand Hill. “You should make the parking lot bigger and allow anyone to park.”

No decision was made.

In other business, a special town meeting was tentatively set for July 18, 6:30 p.m., at one of the schools. The meeting is a petition request to designate Barrett Hill Road as “scenic.” There would be no other business.

It was voted to hold the upcoming primary election in September in the town hall, but the general election in November will be at one of the schools.

A proposal was received from the Roedel family concerning repair of the Old County Farm bridge and causeway.

In a letter, Fred Roedel III said he and his family had consulted with several specialists in dry stone masonry, as they had agreed to do, and requested $5,000 to cover the initial costs of the consultation.

The board agreed to “authorize up to $5,000” from the Bridge Repair Capital reserve Fund, to get the long-delayed project started.

The next regular meeting of the board will be on Wednesday, July11, 6 p.m., in the Town Hall Courtroom.
