Former Abbott Mill, on Riverside Drive, purchased

WILTON – Most people in town know it as the Label Art Building, but to long-time residents it is still The Abbott Worsted Mill, once makers of what was called “some of the best wool suiting in the world.”

The buildings have been vacant since Label Art moved, but have now been purchased by Wilton Mill Workx LLC. The 14-acre site beside the Souhegan River includes a dam, the mill pond, several acres and residential property on Mill Street, as well as the buildings that make up the manufacturing complex.

In a press release, Chris Bernat, managing partner of Wilton Mill Workx, said the company intends to redevelop the site into a “mixed use campus that maximizes its central location just across the river from the Main Street business district.”

Built by the Colony Brothers beginning in 1882, it was acquired by the Abbott family in 1932. It employed up to 150 people at its height. Label Arts moved into the building in 1971.

“We have a true respect for its history,” Bernat said. “We hope to steward a bright future for this centralized property.”

Bernat said they are interested in hearing from prospective companies, organizations, and entrepreneurs in need of space for their endeavors.

Beantown Brand Apparel will be bringing its warehouse and digital print operation to the site, according to Ted Pidcock, president, and a partner in WMW. They will be looking for employees.

WMW plans to make use of the adjoining hydro power dam and penstock, and to also use solar energy.

Long range plans include addressing the town’s need for housing, according to George Menihtas, president of Boston Kitchen Design, also a partner in WMW. “We think a restaurant and other retail could be part of expanding the commercial downtown district as well.”

“It is a unique property,” Bernat said. “We look forward to the opportunity to meet some of the needs of the town.”

The company will be holding an open house by appointment on Oct. 6 and 7. Interested parties are invited to call (Chris Bernat at 1-843-437-8972) or emailchris@wiltonmillworx.com.
