Wilton Lyndeborough One Day of Service scheduled for Oct. 15
WILTON – There are a lot or things that could be done to make the town look and function a little better, and there are people who are willing to devote a few hours toward doing them. The Wilton-Lyndeborough One Day of Service, set for Oct. 15, is an attempt to bring them together – the willing people and the needed work.
And raise money for the Open Cupboard Food Pantry at the same time.
Organizers will direct volunteers with a couple of hours of time to a project which interests them. Interested people can also find on-going projects to support.
The day will end at 5 p.m. with a spaghetti supper at the Collaborative Space sponsored by the church. The menu includes salad, garlic bread, beverages and dessert.
The event is sponsored by the Wilton Community Center, Wilton Collaborative Space, the Missions Committee of the Second Congregational Church, and the Lions Club Charitable Foundation.
Several other organizations are involved, and more are welcome to join.
The Missions Committee is sponsoring their second annual Walk for the Open Cupboard.
The walk will begin at the Collaborative Space and offers several routes through residential parts of town. Sign up forms are available.
The Conservation Commission is looking for volunteers to work at the New Reservoir. Trails need to be cleared and brush and trash picked up.
Stormwater Project Intern Patrick Jackson will come back from Durham to lead the removal of invasive plants from town property.
Other events include a town-wide trash pick-up (or pledge support – see Sandy Lafleur); stenciling storm drains; weeding at the community garden; and cleaning the Historical Rooms at the library.
Help is asked to assist seniors and veterans with outside projects.
The plan is being offered to high school students as part of their community service requirements. High Mowing students have previously assisted in storm drain stenciling.
The Still Good Shed at the Recycling Center needs to be painted. The paint has been donated. That work will be done on Thursday and Friday prior to the Day of Service.
The high school art department is planning to add a mural.
Also being planned is a 24-hour freely available food cupboard. A shed will be constructed on church property and stocked by volunteers. It will be totally anonymous. The idea is patterned after similar projects in Littleton and Hudson. Those in need can take what they want without question, and those wishing to donate may leave non-perishable items as well as toiletries and hygiene products. Information will be available on a Facebook page.
If the pantry works as envisioned, a similar one could be sponsored by the United Church of Lyndeborough.
